The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Health & Fitness Program offers two certification options, while the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) offers four:

ACSM Certified Personal TrainerSM- Fitness professional that develops and implements an individualized approach to exercise leadership in healthy populations and/or those individuals with medical clearance to exercise
Minimum Requirement:- High school diploma or equivalent

CSEP Certified Personal Trainer® - Administers the CPAFLA to healthy populations, develops and implements a tailored physical activity, fitness and lifestyle plan
Minimum Requirement:- 2 year College diploma or 2 year University degree credits in the 7 core areas

ACSM Certified Health Fitness SpecialistThe ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) is a degreed health and fitness professional qualified to pursue a career in university, corporate, commercial, hospital, and community settings
Minimum Requirement:- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field from a regionally accredited college or university

CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist® - Individuals in this category will have completed a four year degree in Physical Activity/Exercise Sciences/Kinesiology/Human Kinetics, etc, with a specialization in health-related fitness plus work and sport-related fitness applications for asymptomatic and symptomatic populations
- Performs assessments, prescribes conditioning exercise, as well as exercise supervision, counselling and healthy lifestyle education in apparently healthy individuals and/or populations with medical conditions, functional limitations or disabilities associated with musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, metabolic, neuromuscular, and ageing conditions
Minimum Requirement:- University degree in exercise science or related area
300+ hours (200 clinical/100 non-clinical) of related experience is strongly recommended |
ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist®The ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist®:- Works with individuals with controlled cardiovascular pulmonary and/ or metabolic disease
- Performs clinical exercise testing and data interpretation
- Conducts and interprets ECGs at rest and during exercise
Minimum Requirement:- Bachelor's Degree in an allied health field
- Minimum of 600 hours of practical experience

ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist®The ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist®:- Works with individuals referred by, or are currently under the care of, a physician
- Works with individuals with cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, orthopedic/musculoskeletal, neuromuscular and/or immunological/hematological disease
- Performs clinical exercise testing and data interpretation
- Develops complex exercise prescriptions and performs exercise counselling
Minimum Requirement:- Master's Degree from a college or university in exercise science, exercise physiology, or kinesiology
