BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Jay R. Hoffman, PhD, CSCS,*D, FNSCA, FACSM, RSCC*D
President
Dr. Jay Hoffman holds the rank of full professor in the Department of Sport and Fitness at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Hoffman is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dr. Hoffman was elected as President of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in July of 2009. Dr. Hoffman holds a unique perspective in his sport science background. Prior to his academic career he signed free agent contracts with the NY Jets and Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL and the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL. Hoffman is also the sports science advisor to Major League Baseball Strength Coaches and is assisting them in developing a steroid education program for baseball. His primary area of study is in sports supplementation and training paradigms. Dr. Hoffman has published more than 150 articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals, and authored several books. Further sharing his research and findings, Dr. Hoffman has lectured at more than 250 national and international conferences and meetings.


Steven J. Fleck, PhD, CSCS, FNSCA, FACSM
President-Elect
Dr. Steven J. Fleck is presently the Chair, Sport Science Department, The Colorado College, Colorado Springs, CO and formerly the Program Director of the Physical Conditioning Program for the U.S. Olympic Committee. Dr. Fleck's research interests include physiological adaptations to resistance training and the application of research findings to optimize resistance training program design. His studies also include training the general population and individuals with various diseases, such as cancer and cystic fibrous. During his career Dr. Fleck has designed programs for celebrities, as well as Olympic athletes in a wide variety of sports. He has authored numerous peer reviewed research articles as well as numerous lay articles in the area of resistance training. Dr. Fleck has also authored several books concerning resistance training including: Designing Resistance Training Programs, Strength Training for Young Athletes, and Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts. His most recent book is an undergraduate text Exercise Physiology Integrating Theory and Application. For his work he has been honored by receiving both the NSCA's Sports Scientist of the Year Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.


Jill A. Bush, PhD, CSCS
Vice-President
Dr. Jill Bush holds an Associate Professor position at Towson University in Towson, Maryland, an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, and Adjunct Associate Professor position at the University of Houston. She received her doctoral degree from Penn State University. Her current research examines nutrient and hormonal effects on exercise testing and performance in youth and adults.


Chat Williams, MS, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D, PT-AR
Secretary/Treasurer
Chat Williams is the Supervisor for Norman Regional Health Club. He currently sits on the National Strength and Conditioning Association Board of Directors and is the past NSCA State Director Committee Chair, Midwest Regional Coordinator and State Director of Oklahoma (2004 State Director of the Year). He also served on the NSCA Personal Trainer SIG Executive Council. He is the author of multiple training DVD's including Training and Program Design with the BOSU Balance Trainer, Weekend Warrior: Training the Recreational Athlete, and co-author of 3-D Legs. His company Oklahoma Strength and Conditioning Productions offers personal training services, sports performance for youth, metabolic testing, and educational conferences and seminars for strength and conditioning professionals.


David J. Szymanski, PhD, CSCS,*D, RSCC*D, FNSCA
Board Member
Dr. David Szymanski is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory, and the Head Baseball Strength and Conditioning Coach at Louisiana Tech University. He formerly was the Sports Performance Director for Velocity Sports Performance-Tulsa. Prior to that, Dr. Szymanski was the Exercise Physiologist for the Auburn University Baseball team for five years and the Volunteer Assistant Baseball Coach for two years. Before attending Auburn University, where he earned a doctorate in exercise physiology, Dr. Szymanski was the Assistant Baseball Coach and Weight Room Director at Texas Lutheran University for five years. His primary research has focused on ways to improve baseball and softball performance.


William (Bill) Roberts Holcomb, PhD, CSCS,*D, FNSCA, ATC, LAT
Board Member
Dr. Bill Holcomb is a certified and licensed athletic trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction, as well as a Fellow in the NSCA. He has served as a professor of sports medicine and athletic training for the last 20 years. Dr. Holcomb is an active member of the NATA and served as the liaison between the NSCA and NATA from 1997-2006. His primary teaching and research emphasis is rehabilitation and reconditioning following athletic injuries.


Jonathan Jost, CSCS, RSCC*E
Board Member
Jon Jost, in his 10th year at Florida State University, serves as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Athletic Department. In addition to his responsibilities within the FSU athletic department, Jost also teaches two classes in the Sports Sciences Masters program and serves on the Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine Advisory Board. He has been an NSCA member and CSCS-certified since 1991. His NSCA volunteer service includes: the Scholarship Committee, Chairman of the College Strength Coaches SIG, and the Coaches Committee. During his career, Jost has had the privilege to train more than 40 NFL draft picks, 10 Olympians, appeared in 11 bowl games, and has been a member of 10 conference Championship Teams. Jost earned a Master’s degree in Education Administration with an emphasis in Athletic Administration from Nebraska in 1994 and a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in strength and conditioning from Nebraska in 1990.


Todd A. Miller, PhD, CSCS,*D
Board Member
Dr. Todd Miller is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington DC, where he is responsible for the development and oversight of the Master's degree concentration in strength and conditioning. He has degrees in Exercise Physiology from Penn State and Texas A&M, and currently studies the role of interactive video gaming as a means of increasing physical activity in children.


Rodney P. Gaines, PhD, CSCS
Board Member
Dr. Rodney Gaines is currently employed by Virginia State University and holds full-time positions both as an Associate Professor and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Dr. Gaines received his MS in Physical Education with an emphasis in Exercise Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and finished his PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in December 2001 in Health and Physical Education with an emphasis in Tests and Measurement in Health Promotion. Dr. Gaines served as the NSCA Virginia State Director from 2003 – 2009, and recently served one year as the NSCA Mid-Atlantic Coordinator. Dr. Gaines was the first ever full-time strength and conditioning coach at Division I Norfolk State University (2002 – 2007), and in August 2009 he started the first ever program at Division II Virginia State University (2009 – present). He has published articles and abstracts in the Vahperd and NSCA journals, and writes newsletters for strength coaches and personal trainers and published two books.


Michael C. Ma, PhD
Public Member
Dr. Michael Ma is a full professor in the College of Life Sciences of the University of Maryland, College Park. His research interest is in the area of insect endocrinology and neurobiology. Dr. Ma has always possessed a great passion for international scientific policy issues. He recently completed a National Academy of Sciences project funded by the Gates Foundation on the future agriculture biotechnologies that would solve world food problems. In the past 10 years, Dr. Ma represented University of Maryland on building both academic and cultural relations with major institutions in China.

Lee Madden
Chief Financial Officer
After receiving an accounting degree from Western Michigan University, Lee Madden spent several years in public accounting and management at McDonald’s Corporation in the Chicago area. Upon moving to Colorado Springs in 1995, she joined the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation and began an accounting service for sports nonprofits in the Colorado Springs area including many national governing bodies as clients.


Boyd Epley, MEd, CSCS,*D, FNSCA, RSCC*E
Sr. Director Coaching and Special Projects
Boyd is the most decorated strength coach in history. Lindy’s National College Football magazine named him one of College Football’s Top 100 Most Important People of the Century after his training program helped produce five national championships and 356 wins in 35 years of Nebraska football. He is the founder of the NSCA and continues to be an advocate for strength coaches.


Kim Ginter
Sr. Director Human Resources
Kim Ginter brings more than 30 years of experience in the development and implementation of strategic plans and policies. Her NSCA career began more than 15 years ago, working in several leadership roles, establishing NSCA Headquarters and headed strategic relationships with several national governing bodies. Before joining the NSCA in 1996, Mrs. Ginter was Membership and Museum Director for the American Numismatic Association focusing on the management and expansion of its nonprofit services and strategic partnerships. She has been a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for more than 20 years and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for more than 14 years.


Torrey Smith, MA, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D
Certification Director
Mr. Smith received his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his Master’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Torrey began his career at the NSCA in 2002 as the Continuing Education Coordinator. After serving in this role for three years, he was promoted to Exam Development Coordinator and then later to Exam Development Manager. Having experience in all aspects of the Certification Department, Torrey was named the Certification Director in 2011. Torrey is also a Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is a Certified Sport Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting (USAW).


Curtis Lords, MS, CSCS
Membership Director
Curtis Lords joined the NSCA in 2006 and is the Membership Director. Prior to joining the NSCA, Curtis retired from the United States Navy after serving as a Naval Aerospace Physiologist and Diving Medical Officer. He trained Naval Aviators in physiological responses to flight, water and land survival, and performance improvement. Lords also conducted strength research at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory. His areas of research concentrated on performance improvement for aviators, rescue swimmers and Navy divers. Lords is a technical rock climber, alpinist, and certified climbing director.


Bill Sands, PhD, CSCS
Education Director
Sands has served as the Director of the Monfort Family Human Performance Research Laboratory at Colorado Mesa University. He is the former Recovery Center Leader, Head of Sport Biomechanics, and Engineering and Senior Physiologist for the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, CO. He has more than 40 years of experience in Olympic sports. He has written 17 books, received more than $1/4 million in grants and contracts, and published more than 200 articles on sport performance. Dr. Sands is a former All-American, MVP, Co-captain, and NAIA Gymnast of the Year. He was also a World Championship coach in gymnastics and produced several Olympians, more than a dozen national team members, and several World Championship Team members. His primary service and research interests lie in athlete recovery, high-performance training, strength and power performance and wilderness emergency medicine.


David Ashley
Chief Technology Director
After 20 years managing a broad range of technology platforms in the United States Air Force and running a technology consultancy for 10 years, Ashley and his team are leading the effort in rebuilding the NSCA technology infrastructure. David is a member of the Project Management Institute. He is a decorated military veteran and currently volunteers his time and talents at two local veteran organizations, helping homeless veterans and contributing to the preservation of veteran rights.


Scott Douglas
Marketing Director
Scott Douglas is responsible for delivering the strategy and the implementation of NSCA’s marketing communication efforts as well as to provide leadership for the organization’s national and international growth initiatives. For more than 15 years, Scott’s career has focused on integrated marketing across a wide spectrum of industries. As Marketing Director with Motum, Scott developed competitive analyses and brand positioning strategies for industry-leading companies including SAP, AlixPartners and OKI Data. Scott also co-founded an advertising agency, delivering creative media solutions to universities, financial institutions and nonprofits. Scott holds an MBA from the University of Colorado and continues the learning process as an adjunct college instructor in management and marketing.


Virginia Meier
Conferences/Events Director
Virginia is responsible for the overall logistics of NSCA’s conferences, symposia and regional events. This includes overseeing all educational seminars and annual programs. Virginia and staff design and deliver more than a dozen conferences and symposia for NSCA members, certified professionals, and supporters each year. Virginia brought more than 20 years of conference, event and hospitality experience to the NSCA. In addition to participating as a guest panelist for several specialty conferences, webcasts and training events, Virginia’s experience includes working for the American Numismatic Association and the Broadmoor resort. Virginia is actively involved in Meeting Professionals International and American Society of Association Executives.


Keith E. Cinea, MA, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D
Publications Director
Keith E. Cinea, has served the NSCA in various communications and educational positions since 1999. Before coming to the NSCA, he was the Strength Training Coordinator for the Central Denver YMCA, and worked as an Adjunct Faculty Member at Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado. Keith earned his BA and MA in exercise physiology from the University of Northern Colorado and holds a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
