Dr. Mike Clark, DPT, MS, CPT, CES, PES, is chief executive officer of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). An industry visionary, he is the creator of NASM’s exclusive Optimum Performance Training™ (OPT) model used by thousands of health and fitness professionals worldwide. Since joining NASM in 2000, Dr. Clark’s innovation and leadership have redefined the organization as a global leader and authority in education for fitness, performance and sports-medicine professionals that empowers individuals to live active and healthy lives.
Men’s Health magazine selected Dr. Clark as “Health and Fitness Visionary of the Year” for his role in shaping the future of the health and fitness industry. This recognition corresponds to his long-term planning in spearheading NASM’s continued growth since joining the company. By managing partnerships with clubs, corporations, and apparel companies, Dr. Clark ensures the successful integration of NASM products into the health and fitness community.
Dr. Clark is a noted lecturer and author whose recent works include NASM Essentials for Sports Performance Training (LWW, 2009), NASM Essentials for Certified Personal Training (LWW, 2006), NASM Essentials for Corrective Exercise (NASM, 2007) and dotFIT Me (Celestia Corp., 2009). Additionally, Dr. Clark co-authored Prevention of Repetitive Shoulder Injuries in Overhead Athletes (Sports Physical Therapy Section, APTA, 2007) and authored Optimum Performance Training: Basketball (HarperCollins, 2006); Advanced Stabilization-Training for Performance Enhancement (Chapter 29); Rehabilitation of the Spine A Practitioner’s Manual (LWW, 2006); and Core Stabilization Training in Rehabilitation: Rehabilitation Techniques in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training (McGraw-Hill, 2004).
Recognized as one of the top physical therapists in the industry, Dr. Clark has rehabilitated, reconditioned and trained hundreds of professional and elite athletes. His list of athlete clients includes MVP’s, All-Stars and Champions from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and Olympic athletes. Clark enters his 12th season as the physical therapist for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. In 1996 and 2000, Dr. Clark served as a physical therapist in the Olympic Games. He has also worked with A-list celebrities and most recently served as Shaquille O’Neil’s’ injury prevention and performance coach on the primetime television show “Shaq vs.”
Dr. Clark is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, Orthopedic Physical Therapy Association, Sports Physical Therapy Association and serves on the Board of Directors for American Specialty Health Silver & Fit program. He also serves on the advisory boards of Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG.com platform, MakeItPro.com, PowerPlate and bioDensity.
He received his doctor of physical therapy from Rocky Mountain University, a master of science in human movement science and sports medicine from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a bachelor of science in physical therapy and exercise and sports science from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse.
Dr. Clark resides in Atlanta with his wife, Melissa and their three daughters.
