Regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acid will foster optimal health in the long run. It reduce inflammation in the body and help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.
There are good fats and bad fats, and Omega-3 is the gold medallist in good fat. It is an essential fatty acid which means your body cannot manufacture it, you need to consume it from healthy sources.
It is also a monounsaturated fat, which means it is liquid at room temperature, as opposed to unhealthy saturated fats which are solid at room temperature. Consequently, they don't add to blood lipid fats but actually reduce them. They inhibit clotting tendency in the blood thus reducing chances of heart disease.
The best sources of omega-3 comes from cold water ocean fish such as mackerel, sardines, salmon, and kippers. You can also take fish oil supplements. If you consume salmon, make sure it's wild Alaskan salmon. They contain far more omega-3 than farm raised salmon.
Vegetarian sources of omega-3 are found in flaxseed, and in lesser quantities in canola oil and soy oils.
