Exercise as Medicine: Part 4 On Feb 17, 2011 Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Prevention
[media id="PRD__4c8d1cab502ef7_24903217" title="Seniors Exercising"] Would you believe regular exercise can prevent you from being a victim of America's first and third leading causes of death? Research has shown that regular exercise can decrease risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
For instance, one study monitoring almost 88,400 women over 20 years found that those who exercised regularly reduced heart disease risk by 150% compared to women who did not exercise at all. And another major study following almost 17,000 men for 10 years determined that high-fit men were 68% less likely to die from stroke than sedentary men.
Don’t allow yourself to be another statistic for America’s top causes of mortality. To minimize your risk of heart disease and stroke I suggest starting by making sure to get your 10,000 steps in daily, perform strength training exercises 2-3 days per week that challenge the whole-body – such as the Side Step-up, Balance to Overhead Press with 2-Arms – and perform cardio exercise 2-3 times per week for at least 30 minutes.
