For men, the B.E.E. = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight(kg)) + (5.003 x height(cm)) - (6.775 x age)
For women, the B.E.E. = 655.1 + (9.563 x weight (kg)) + (1.850 x height(cm)) - (4.676 x age)
Using ideal weight instead of actual weight gives better estimation for underweight people, but could give too high estimation for fat people. Thus there is a debit which weight should be used in the equation.
Total Caloric Requirements equal the B.E.E. multiplied by the sum of the stress and activity factors. Stress plus activity factors range from 1.2 to over 2. These are used in the clinical practices.
Equation is based on: J.A. Harris and F.G. Benedict, Biometric studies of basal metabolism in man. Publication 270, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Washington, DC (1919).
