There are over 30,000 personal training certificates offered worldwide -- most of them offered online -- and some that may not be nationally accredited or credible. Narrowing it down to the top six personal training certificates comes down to those certificates that are nationally recognized, and/or those that may require a prerequisite of a bachelor's or associate degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university.

NSCA-CPT and CSCS

The National Strength and Conditioning Association Personal Training Certificate is the first credential nationally accredited in 1996 by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, also known as the NCCA. There are more than 9,600 fitness professionals who have the NSCA-CPT, according to NSCA. Although no post-secondary course work is required to obtain this certificate, the next step up is obtaining the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through NSCA. The CSCS certificate is held by more than 21,000 fitness professionals from a wide variety of fields, such as personal trainers, strength coaches and physical therapists. A prerequisite before taking the CSCS exam is bachelor's degree in a health-related field.

ACE

Another nationally accredited certifying agency, through the NCCA, is the American Council on Exercise. Those who obtained the ACE Personal Trainer Certification have demonstrated their knowledge of exercise science, fitness assessment, risk factor screening, spotting, proper technique of exercise equipment and nutrition, according to ACE. The certification is continually being updated by the most recent research in the health field, to keep those who are certified well prepared. A degree is not a prerequisite in obtaining an ACE Certified Personal Training Certificate. However, a strong background in health and fitness will provide test takers an advantage in passing the exam.

NASM

Another NCAA accredited certificate for personal training is offered by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. The NASM CPT will provide fitness professionals with the education of kinesiology, physiology and anatomy as well as the basic functions that are performed by a personal trainer. Obtaining this certification does not require a post-secondary course of study; however, re-certification is needed every two years. According to NASM, this ensures that the fitness professionals stay current with any new research and new skills and abilities needed to perform the job functions.

NESTA

The National Exercise and Sports Trainer Association offers another well known Personal Training Certificate, which is accredited by the NCCA. Most gyms such as 24 Hours, Bally's and Gold's Gym, recognize the NESTA CPT, according to NESTA. Established in 1992, NESTA has certified over 45,000 fitness, health and wellness professionals.

NFPT

Another NCCA acredited certificate for personal training is offered from the National Federation of Professional Trainers. The NFPT is a well-recognized certifying agency that has been offering certificates to fitness professionals since 1988, according to NFPT. To ensure that you stay current with your knowledge, NFPT requires that after one full year of certification, you must complete two continuing education credits each year.
