Sports ScienceBiochemistry The Sport Biochemistry Unit conducts blood and urine biochemical tests for athletes to monitor their power of recuperation after training and competition. These tests also help to evaluate the status of the athletes' health, and to quantify exercise intensity during training. BiomechanicsThe Sport Biomechanics Unit provides technique and game analyses for a range of sports that can pinpoint athletes' strength and weakness. Recommendations to enhance performance based on sound mechanical principles are passed on to coaches and athletes. NutritionThe Sport Nutrition Unit assesses the nutritional status and body composition (height, weight and body fat) of scholarship athletes. In addition to individual counseling, the Sport Nutrition Unit also gives lectures to individual sports to ensure that athletes learn about the importance of nutrition in training and competition. In addition, it works with the Catering Department to design menus which include optimal nutrients for training, competition and recovery. PhysiologyPhysiological tests are conducted routinely for athletes. These tests evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and endurance, energy system, aging and flexibility attributes. The results reflect how the athletes react to their training program and also provide objective guidelines around which coaches can design individualized training program. PsychologyTo maximize the performance potential of scholarship athletes, the Sport Psychology Unit provides them with mental skills to cope with the stress of competition and training. Sport Psychology services include individual and group consultation, on-field intervention, biofeedback training, educational pamphlets and applied research.
