The Nation's Best Strength and Conditioning Experts Gather at NSCA's 35th Annual National Conference in Rhode Island

NSCA holds its 35th Annual National Conference July 11-14 in Providence, RI.
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- This July, thousands of the best-of-the-best strength and conditioning coaches, sports scientists and others are coming to Providence, Rhode Island to attend the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) 35th annual conference. As the world prepares to cheer some of its finest athletes during the Summer Olympics, these professionals plan to explore hot topics that could have immediate and long-term impact on everyone from weekend warriors and high school athletes to professional-level players.

In honor of this premier conference’s 35th anniversary, the NSCA (www.nsca.com), the worldwide authority on strength and conditioning, is going all-out this year with an amazing spectrum of speakers and hot topics.

Many coming for world-class certification and networking
The NSCA’s Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) certifications are the industry’s gold standards. NSCA’s National Conference provides an opportunity for these fitness professionals from around the world to learn what it takes to earn one of these prestigious distinctions. Certification testing is also administered during the conference. Others attend to accrue the valuable Continuing Education Units necessary for re-certification.

Launching at this year’s annual event is NSCA’s newest credential of distinction, the Certified Special Population Specialist (CSPS) certification. The CSPS certifies fitness professionals who work with clients of all ages regarding their health and fitness needs, preventively, and in collaboration with healthcare professionals. Special populations also include those with chronic and temporary health conditions.

With thousands of their peers in attendance, this is also a great time for special interest groups to network. For example, female trainers and other participants in the women’s luncheon will gather to share unique training opportunities, discuss major issues and review hot trends.
Strength of America Awards honor best practices in our nation’s schools
One of the most popular conference highlights is the presentation of the Strength of America Awards during the banquet. The NSCA partners with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition to honor schools that exhibit the highest standards in the safety and success of young athletes. “These awards are in keeping with the NSCA’s dedication to ensuring the safety of young athletes through the education and promotion of best-practices when training on the field and in the weight room,” explains the NSCA’s Sr. Director Boyd Epley.

Hundreds of relevant educational sessions
From its morning yoga workout sessions to its hands-on interactive training sessions, this is a national conference like none other. You might never play professional hockey or represent the United States in the Olympics, but the discussions during this National Conference may well impact your family’s fitness. The pros will return to their hometowns with newfound knowledge that they’ll likely be sharing with students, clients, friends, family and neighbors. Some of the presentations will include:

Managing athletes in extreme heat
People who exercise outdoors, especially when the sun is at its hottest, are at risk for dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. In his research session, Maximizing Athletic Performance and Safety During Intense Exercise in the Heat, Dr. Doug Casa, will explain how to get the most from each workout, how to pace activities, and early warning signs of heat-related illnesses.

Should you blame your genes for your struggle with weight?
If your parents have always been heavy, does that predestine you to also have a life-long battle with the scale? In his lecture, From Mom’s Genes to Your Jeans: Genetic Determinants of Weight Management, Lou Schuler, CSCS will explore how much of your body fat is controlled by your genes and how fitness can help you overcome other biological factors.

Preventing strenuous exercise from making you sick
There’s a reason why so many marathoners catch cold after a race. Strenuous exercise can weaken the body’s immune system for days afterward. In his lecture, Role of Nutrition in Mitigating Exercise-induced Immune Depression, Richard Kreider, PhD will review some of the latest research on exercise and immune health, and whether nutrition from food and/or supplements may be beneficial.

The NSCA’s 35th National Conference will be held July 11-14 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. For a complete list of presentations and additional information about the nonstop activities to be held during this event, visit www.nsca.com.
