With a relentless passion for fitness and health, Aric Sudicky has propelled himself to the forefront of the Canadian fitness industry. While attending university he was a decorated student athlete, winning a national silver medal for varsity volleyball along with the prestigious “Silver Medallion” from the University of Calgary for graduating at the top of his class. With multiple certifications along with university education in biology, Aric is truly passionate about health, the human body and the ability to utilize science to better those around him.
He has also been extensively published as a fitness model in magazines such as Maximum Fitness, Inside Fitness and Exercise & Health, earning the nickname “Abs” along the way. He has also has co-produced and hosted his personal DVD, Optimum Fitness & Nutrition.
Aric has also established himself as an elite fitness competition coach, working with a variety of competitors such as current CBBF Figure Tall Champion Emily Zelinka and UFE Pro Fitness Model, Jet Black.
Aric is an ambassador for Canadian drug free bodybuilding and makes it clear that he is not only an accomplished model, but a true fitness professional who is dedicated to helping others achieve their goals in fitness and health and someone we just had to chat to!
One word to describe yourself?Drug Free
How did you get into fitness/bodybuilding?in university and once again found my love for fitness & bodybuilding that I enjoyed growing up. From there I had my first publication in 2006 and the rest is history.
What has been your biggest accomplishment in the fitness field?Starting Medpoint Health Care’s medically integrated fitness program. There is nothing like it in Canada’s fitness industry, where doctors work with fitness professionals, specialists and nutritionists to ensure we have an extremely high standard of care. Every client in our fitness program receives 3hrs of medical testing, including full blood work analysis, full physical, “Bod Pod” body composition test and the list goes on.
What is your eating plan like?It has had two distinct phases for almost my entire professional career.
a) Leaning out for a shoot on short notice (2-3 weeks).
b) Growth phase between shoots where my calories increase substantially, while still staying trim to prep on short notice.
Unlike at the start of my career, I have learned that balanced nutrition is possible with photo shoot and contest preparation. Much of fat loss comes down to calories in vs out. Only in extreme cases do I have to manipulate macronutrient ratios to achieve desired results.
What food can’t you go without?Egg whites and chicken. Pretty soon I will be growing feathers and starting to cluck!
What is a typical daily routine for you?6:30am: wake up
8:30-6pm (working with patients at our clinic, training clients, hosting my radio show etc)
6:30-8pm: Time to train!
8-10pm: Evenings consist of reading articles and catching up on work. You can never learn enough.
What are your workouts like?Believe it or not, I only exercise a maximum 4 days/wk, even while dieting. I am on a split muscle group program that specifically targets my weak points. As a drug free athlete, frequency is important to ensure I bring up these groups. For instance, I train my quads/calves and upper chest 2x/week. Timing is important to ensure I have time to recover and grow in between bouts of resistance on these muscles.
Symmetry should be in the back of every aspiring fitness models mind while developing a program.
Famous fitness icon/bodybuilder you would most like to have coffee/protein shake with?For me, it isn’t a bodybuilder I would want to chat with. But the great MINDS in exercise and nutrition. Dr. Peter Lemon (former Weider researcher) and Dr. John Berardi (founder of Precision Nutrition and former PhD student of Lemon) are arguably the two greatest minds in Canadian sport nutrition. Being around great MINDS results in a great body. Looking at great bodies does not provide the tools to build your body. Make sense? The secrets to great results are all in the scientific literature.
What keeps you motivated to stay in shape?My passion for fitness & health. I would be training this hard regardless of my career choice. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of building my body. Professionally, I am keen to be the best fitness professional Canada has to offer. An elite, natural physique falls in line with having a marketable brand that companies and networks want to associate with.
However, how I look means absolutely nothing when it comes to my ability to help others improve their health status. That being said, I read and continually educate myself just as much as I train.
What is the most challenging thing you deal with about consistently staying in top shape?TIME! Any elite fitness model or bodybuilder will tell you that TIME is everything. Every extra minute I spend on an email, text, phone call will cut into my precious training time. There are only so many hours in a day and to train and eat to perfection it is a must that I manage my time effectively. This also means sacrificing things that occupy most people’s time, such as television and a busy social life.
You own physical feature you are most proud of?Two years ago, I was at a point in my career when I could have sat back and accepted my physique and maintained it for years. On the contrary, after putting myself under the microscope I realize I was far from satisfied. After months of hard work, I am now proud of muscles I used to be self conscious of: quads, calves and an upper chest that is finally prominent in photographs. It is humbling for a fitness model to realize they are far from perfect, but this is something everyone should do if they truly aspire to have an elite physique.
